The winter 2013/2014 courses are now all completed. The summer 2014 course schedule is now online. The winter 2014/2015 program is not yet finalized. Please check the Rescue Dynamics webite at at a later date for future updates. The following form letter provides typical information for this course:

This letter will serve to introduce you to the Introductory Waterfall Ice Climbing Courses you expressed interest in. The dates for the first course are January 14, 15 and February 4,5, 2012. The cost of the course in 2012 was $288.75 including GST subject to change. In order for you to be confirmed on the course you must prepay the course fee, complete the personal information form, then read, understand and sign the waiver. The waiver must be witnessed by someone other than a family member. Cheques should be made payable to Rescue Dynamics. If you have not paid, your spot is NOT yet confirmed. Booking and cancellation information is on the attached sheet. We reserve the right to cancel the course in the event of severe weather or low enrollment. Should this happen, your course fees will be refunded.

You have the option of adding a third day for another guided waterfall ice ascent for an additional $288.75 including GST. (Must be booked in advance.) You can also take the Basic and Intermediate courses together to make the "Complete Introduction to Waterfall Ice".

This course introduces you to skills required to safely begin ice climbing with an experienced partner or group. The course content includes movement on ice, knots, ropework, belaying, rappelling and safety topics. The instruction for this course takes place in David Thompson Country, west of Nordegg. A free guidebook to the ice climbs in the area is on our website.

We will provide instruction and all the technical climbing equipment including hardware, crampons, ice axes, technical ice tools, ropes, helmets and harnesses. (Do NOT rent any climbing gear for this course!) If you own your own gear, feel free to bring it if you wish. We DO NOT provide climbing boots, or clothing. Plastic mountaineering boots are best and can be rented from MEC in Edmonton, Gravity Gear in Jasper or various outlets in Calgary and Banff. Be sure your clothing can handle the changes in mountain environment, including extreme cold, wind, snow or rain? and even bright sun. Ice is a very wet environment and spare gloves / mitts are a must. We are outside all day on both days, and the course will proceed in all but the most severe weather. The enclosed equipment list may help you to prepare for the course. You are responsible for your own meals, accommodation and transportation for the entire course. Be sure to prepare a bag lunch and bring water or other drinks for each day of the course, as we do not return to the vehicles for lunch. A good lightweight thermos is often handy.

The meeting time and place for the course is 8:00 am on the first morning of the course at the Shunda Creek Hostel. You should be finished breakfast and completely ready to go at that time. Course participants should book to stay both nights at the hostel which has modern facilities including showers and a hot tub (bathing suit required.) Hostel bookings can be made directly at the Shunda Creek Hostel at (403) 721-2140.
