Greetings!
NOTE: Public courses and guiding were suspended for summer 2022 due to continuing issues related to COVID. We hope to return to a more regular schedule in 2024.
This letter will serve to introduce you to the STandard Wilderness First Aid EMFA Course for ACC GMC Leaders. The dates for the course are TBA (Saturday & Sunday). The course location is at the Alpine Club Clubhouse in Canmore. The course fee is covered by the ACC and includes textbook and instruction.
In order for you to be confirmed on the course you must first complete the personal information form, then read, understand and sign the waiver. You will then need to mail or email those completed forms in. The club will then be billed for the course fees.
We reserve the right to cancel the course in the event of severe weather or low enrollment. Should this happen, your course fees will be refunded. See our website for complete cancellation policies and procedures.
The course introduces you to basic first aid related to traumatic injuries in the mountains as well as medical emergencies related to the outdoor & mountain environment. This course has a strong emphasis on the outdoors and improvising with the materials at hand in outdoor situations.
You may also want to consider a standard urban first aid course from a recognized agency to round out your background in other first aid topics which we will not cover. Remember, this course is Wilderness First Aid and does not claim to address urban topics in the same way as a regular urban course.
We will provide instruction and all of the splinting and bandaging materials we need, but we encourage you to bring a pack containing the equipment you might have on a one day or multi-day hiking, skiing, climbing trip for the second day of the course. Everything from packs and sleeping bags to skis and poles can be used to improvise first aid devices. You should wear old comfortable clothing that you don't mind getting dirty. We will spend a fair amount of time doing various skills which may have you laying on the floor or down on your hands and knees.
The 4th edition of the textbook "Wilderness First Aid" by the Wilderness Medical Sociaty and the AAOS is included in the course fees. A number of handouts will also be provided, but you will require your own pencil and paper if you want to make notes.
Meeting time and place for the course is 8:00 am, at the ACC Clubhouse in Canmore. Be completely ready for an indoor class at that time. You should prepare a bag lunch and drinks for each day of the course so that lunch breaks can be kept to a reasonable length of time. The course runs from 8:00 to 6:00 each day and is quite intensive. Do not plan to be finished before 6PM on Sunday. An evening session may be involved on Saturday. There is a tremendous amount of material to presented in this short span, so please strive to be on time. In case of emergency you can contact me on my cell phone at (780) 916-7951.
IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT WAIVERS: Our insurer requires that we have a two part process for using and administering waivers. If you sign up by mail or email you must included a signed and witnessed waiver as part of your application for all courses. You will also be required to sign a second full colour paper copy of the waiver in the presence of one of our staff members. There are no exceptions.
If you have any further questions, feel free to call and ask for Cyril.
Sincerely
