Greetings!

NOTE: Public courses and guiding were suspended for summer 2022 due to continuing issues related to COVID. We hope to retur to a more normal schedule in 2024.

This letter will serve to introduce you to the Standard Wilderness First Aid or “EMFA” Course you expressed interest in. The course fee includes GST, instruction, textbook and SAM splint.

In order for you to be confirmed on the course you must first complete the personal information form, then read, understand and sign the waiver. You will then need to mail or email those completed forms in. You will then be billed for the course fees.

If you have not paid, your spot is NOT yet confirmed. We reserve the right to cancel the course in the event of severe weather or low enrollment. Should this happen, your course fees will be refunded. See our website for complete cancellation policies and procedures.

The course introduces you to basic first aid related to traumatic injuries as well as medical emergencies related to the outdoor & mountain environment. This course has a strong emphasis on the outdoors and improvising with the materials at hand in outdoor situations.

We will only be covering one person adult CPR as part of this course and not covering AED use, so I urge you to attend a more comprehensive CPR training course before or after attending this course. This course is Wilderness First Aid and does not address some topics that may be covered in an urban based standard first aid course.

We will provide instruction and a variety of splinting and bandaging materials, but we encourage you to bring a pack containing the equipment you might have on a one day or multi-day hiking, skiing, paddling or climbing trip for the second day of the course. Everything from packs and sleeping bags to skis and poles can be used to improvise first aid devices.

You should wear old comfortable clothing that you don't mind getting dirty. We will spend a fair amount of time doing various skills which may have you laying on the floor or down on your hands and knees.

If you book at least four weeks in advance you will be mailed a copy of Wilderness First Aid 5th edition by AAOS & the Wilderness Medical Society. A number of handouts will also be provided, but you will require your own pencil and paper if you want to make notes.

Meeting time and place for the course is 8:00 am, at a location to be announced. Be completely ready for an indoor class at that time. You should prepare a bag lunch and drinks for each day of the course so that lunch breaks can be kept to a reasonable length of time. The course runs from 8:00 to 6:00 each day. There is a tremendous amount of material to presented in this short span, so please strive to be on time.

There is a 40 question exam at the end of the course. Upon successful completion you will receive an ECSI Wilderness First Aid certificate. Rescue Dynamics is a registered Educational Centre with the Emergency Care and Safety Institute, which is the training arm of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American College of Emergency Physicians. If you have any further questions, feel free to contact us.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT WAIVERS: Our insurer requires that we have a two part process for using and administering waivers. If you sign up by mail or email you must included a signed and witnessed waiver as part of your application for all courses. You will also be required to sign a second full colour paper copy of the waiver in the presence of one of our staff members. There are no exceptions.

Sincerely

Cyril Shokoples IFMGA
Chief Instructor
